Wesley Chapel's first YMCA opened its doors on September 28, and more than 6,300 people had already joined by then, according to the Tampa Bay Times. Three weeks after it opened, most of the fall programs you register for were listed as full. You can still use the building plenty this fall. The open space is in the posted group-exercise classes, at the YMCA's other branches that your membership already covers, and in a winter program calendar that starts in January.
A bigger building that still filled up
When the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA first announced a Wesley Chapel branch in late 2020, the plan was a 30,000-square-foot building costing $15 million, set to open in 2023. The Mary W. Sierra Family YMCA at 4379 Wellbeing Way opened instead as a 49,319-square-foot, $35 million facility. The Times reports it is expected to serve about 40,000 households.
Compare that with the branch it's named alongside. The Bob Sierra Family YMCA in Northdale opened in 1985 and had nearly 12,000 members as of June 2025, the Times reported at the Wesley Chapel groundbreaking. The Wesley Chapel branch had more than half that many members before it opened, so the bigger building filled up anyway.
You can see it in the program listings. As of October 19, the YMCA's registration system showed these as full:
- October weekday swim lessons for preschool and school-age beginners and intermediates, which ran October 5 through 28
- Most of the Saturday parent-child, preschool and school-age swim sessions that run October 10 through November 28
- The Fall 2 coed basketball league for ages 10 to 12, and the Lil Rookies clinic for ages 3 to 5 that runs October 23 through December 11
- Both Fall 2 coed volleyball age groups, 9 to 11 and 12 to 14, which run October 19 through December 19
Several of the other Fall 2 basketball leagues, for ages 5 to 7 up through 15 to 17, were already underway by then. If your child didn't get a spot this fall, the leagues are running as scheduled. They just filled with families who signed up before the doors opened.
The posted class schedule has the most room
The branch's group-exercise schedule for October, November and December looks very different from the registration pages. It includes aqua classes and general fitness classes, plus a long list of options for older adults, including AOA, SilverSneakers Cardio, SilverSneakers Classic, SilverSneakers Yoga, Zumba Gold and Chair Yoga. On Monday, October 19, for example, the YMCA's daily schedule listed Zumba Gold at 11 a.m. and SilverSneakers Classic at noon. The YMCA describes SilverSneakers as focused on strength, range of motion and the movements of daily life.
Because these classes run off a posted weekly schedule, a member who missed the fall registration window still has something to do every day. Look at the daily schedule page before you go so you can see how a particular class handles its spots.
The fitness floor needs no registration at all. The building has a large fitness center with cardio and strength equipment, a gymnasium, group exercise studios, and EGYM technology that tracks your workouts and can personalize them. Current hours, from the branch's location page:
| Day | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday to Thursday | 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. |
| Friday | 5 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. |
| Saturday | 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
| Sunday | 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. |
One swim session is still ahead this fall, and January brings more
If you have a preschooler who missed October, the swim listings show a preschool beginner session that runs November 2 through December 2. It starts next Monday, so check its status today instead of waiting until the weekend. The aquatics center has lap and teaching pools and a family adventure pool with a waterslide.
For youth sports, winter is your next real chance. The registration system already lists these:
- Winter coed basketball leagues for ages 5 to 7 up through 15 to 17, January 18 through March 13, 2027
- Winter coed volleyball for ages 9 to 11 and 12 to 14, on the same January 18 to March 13 dates
- A winter Lil Rookies soccer clinic for ages 3 to 5, January 28 through March 18, 2027
The fall leagues filled with families who signed up before the building opened. If you want a winter spot, register now instead of planning to sort it out after the holidays.
Your membership already covers the other branches
The YMCA says members get unlimited access to all 10 of its family centers and its three wellness centers. For a Wesley Chapel household, that turns the branches people drove to before September into backups. Per the YMCA's locations directory, the closest ones are:
- New Tampa Family YMCA, 16221 Compton Dr., Tampa
- East Pasco Family YMCA, 37301 Chapel Hill Loop, Zephyrhills
- Bob Sierra Family YMCA, 4029 Northdale Blvd., Tampa
If a class you want at Wellbeing Way is crowded, or a different time works better at Compton Drive, the same membership card covers both. Access to programs at other branches depends on your membership benefits, so check with the branch before counting on a specific program elsewhere.
Here are the rates on the Mary W. Sierra join page as of October 19, 2026:
| Membership | Monthly | Join fee |
|---|---|---|
| Family, parents and dependent children under 29 | $98 | $75 |
| Two Person Household | $90 | $75 |
| Individual, 20 to 29 | $45 | $35 |
| Individual, 30 and up | $58 | $35 |
| Senior Couple, one member 62 or older | $75 | $35 |
| Senior, 62 and up | $48 | $35 |
| Teen, 13 to 19 | $39 | $15 |
The table doesn't show one difference between the tiers. Stay & Play childcare comes only with Family and Two Person Household memberships, for children on the membership. It takes children from 6 weeks to 6 years old for up to two hours while the adult works out. The parent has to stay in the building and sign the child in and out. At this branch, Stay & Play runs 8:45 a.m. to noon and 4 to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and 8:45 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and Sundays. Those morning hours line up with the late-morning older-adult classes, and the evening hours fit a workout after school pickup.
Why the building sits beside a hospital
The location explains some of the demand. The YMCA sits at the southwest corner of Bruce B. Downs and Eagleston boulevards in Seven Oaks, on land BayCare leased to it directly south of BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel, the Times reported in June 2025. In that same article, hospital president Nanette Wilcox said the location would let discharged patients easily continue their wellness routines next door. The Times compared the setup to the AdventHealth Wellness Center farther south on Bruce B. Downs.
At the opening, BayCare's Dr. Christopher Bucciarelli said, as quoted by Tampa Bay Beacons, "When we think of healthcare, it occurs in hospitals. It occurs in clinics. But health, health occurs every day in places like this." The YMCA's plans include wellness and chronic-disease prevention programs and activities for teens and seniors, the Times reported at the opening. At the groundbreaking, the plans also named offerings for cancer survivors. So far, the branch's posted calendar has no dated sessions for those programs. For now, the SilverSneakers, Zumba Gold and Chair Yoga classes on the October through December schedule are the closest thing to that health-focused programming, and they have the most room this fall.
Wesley Chapel waited six years for this building, and it's been fun to see it fill up this fast.
